QUESTIONS?

Does my file get uploaded anywhere?

No. All the reading and stripping happens right in your browser with plain JavaScript. There is no server, no account, and we never see your files. Turn off your Wi-Fi after the page loads and it still works.

What formats are supported?

Photos (JPEG, PNG, HEIC), raw files (DNG, CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, ORF, RAF, PEF), video (MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV), audio (MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, Ogg, Opus, AIFF) and PDFs all get full inspection and lossless removal. Other browser-readable images, such as WebP and AVIF, are cleaned via a canvas re-encode.

Does stripping reduce quality?

No. Metadata is removed or blanked byte by byte and the picture, the frames and the samples are never re-encoded, so a cleaned file decodes identically to the original. The one exception is redacting pixels, which has to re-encode by definition, and the page says so when you do it.

Can you remove Content Credentials and AI labels?

Yes. Content Credentials (C2PA) are a signed record of who made a file and what tool made it, and MetaStrip reads what the record actually says — the tool, whether the origin claim is a camera or a trained model, the signing certificate, the edit history — then removes it if you ask. Worth knowing what you are giving up: removing it also removes the file's proof of authenticity. Both are legitimate choices, so the page shows you the claim and lets you decide.

My screenshot has no metadata. Am I safe?

Not necessarily, and this is the one thing metadata removal cannot help with. A screenshot usually carries no camera data at all, while the sensitive part sits in the pixels: a name, an address, a balance, an email thread. MetaStrip points that out when a file looks like a screenshot, and the REDACT PIXELS button blacks out or pixelates whatever you drag over, destroying those pixels rather than covering them.

Is it open source, and where do I report a bug?

Yes, all of it, with zero dependencies — read every byte on GitHub or open an issue there. You can also message Roshan on X or LinkedIn. Real bugs and rough edges are exactly what shipping in the open is for.
