Here is a small experiment. Open your camera roll, pick any photo you took at home, and run it through a metadata viewer. There is a very good chance you will find your latitude and longitude sitting right there, accurate to a few meters.
I am not exaggerating for effect. Phones write GPS coordinates into photos by default. It lives in a hidden block of the file called EXIF, along with your camera model, the exact second the shot was taken, and sometimes more. You never see it, but it travels with the file everywhere the file goes.
Where this actually bites people
The classic case is selling stuff online. You photograph your old sofa in your living room, upload it to a classifieds site, and the listing now quietly includes the coordinates of your living room. Anyone who downloads the image can read them. Some sites clean this up for you. Plenty do not.
It also happens with photos sent over email, shared through cloud drive links, posted on forums, attached to blog posts, or uploaded to smaller apps that never thought about it. The big social networks mostly strip metadata when you post. Almost nothing else does.
There have been real cases of stalkers finding people through photo metadata, and the famous one where a tech magazine interview revealed a fugitive's location because a staffer posted a photo straight from the phone. This is not a theoretical problem.
Check your own photos right now
You do not need to install anything. Drop a photo into MetaStrip and it shows you everything the file is carrying. If there are GPS coordinates in there, you get a map link so you can see exactly what a stranger would see.
The whole thing runs in your browser. Your photo never uploads anywhere, which felt like the only honest way to build a privacy tool. If it leaks, hit the strip button and you get back the exact same image with nothing attached.

What EXIF actually is
The hidden data has a name: EXIF, short for exchangeable image file format. Think of it as a notebook the camera fills in for you and staples to the picture. Every time you press the shutter it writes down what it knows.
Some of it is harmless and genuinely useful — shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length, the stuff you would want if you were learning what makes a good shot. Some of it is your camera make, model, lens and sometimes a serial number, which is enough to tie a photo back to a specific device you own. And some of it is the exact second you pressed the button, plus, if location was on, coordinates accurate to a few metres.
You can read it yourself without any tool: on a Mac, open a photo in Preview and press Command-I, then look at the More Info tab. On Windows, right-click, Properties, Details. On a phone, the photo's info panel usually shows a map if there are coordinates. That map is the whole problem in one screen.
Turning it off for the next photo
Two minutes of settings stops your camera writing coordinates into anything new. On iPhone: Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services, Camera, and choose Never. On Android it is usually the camera app's own settings, under a name like Location tags or Save location. Both cover photos and video together, since the permission is granted to the camera app rather than per format.
Two things that catches and two it does not. It stops the next photo leaking. It does nothing about the thousands already in your library, which is what a cleaner is for. And recording apps ask for location separately, so a voice memo can still be geotagged after you have turned the camera off.
Update, August 2026: it is not only photos
Everything here applies at least as strongly to video. A clip off a phone carries coordinates in a QuickTime atom, and because people share video without thinking of it as a document, it gets checked even less often.
Worse, a motion photo hides a whole video inside the picture. Strip the photo's EXIF with most tools and the buried clip still knows where you were standing. Voice memos are the same story: they are MP4 files underneath, so they can carry the same location atom.
If you post from home, assume every file type does this until you have checked one.
